Further examining the medium of film itself, Colorfilm is a work Lawder made while trying to make a minimalist, "pure color" film. Using spliced-together strips of colored film leader in white, yellow, blue, red, green, etc., Lawder ran the film through a projector and found the results to be quite boring. While he was running the film, though, he noticed how beautiful the colored strips of film looked as they ran through the projector. So, he turned a camera on the projector and filmed the colored film gorgeously winding its way through the projector's machinery." - Noel Black, Colorado Springs Independent

In 1944 Lye moved to New York City, initially to direct for the documentary newsreel The March of Time. He settled in the West Village, where he mixed with artists who later became the Abstract Expressionists, encouraged New York’s emerging filmmakers such as Francis Lee, taught with Hans Richter, and assisted Ian Hugo on Bells of Atlantis. Color Cry was based on a development of the “rayogram” or “shadow cast” process, using fabrics as stencils, with the images synchronized to a haunting blues song by Sonny Terry, which Lye imagined to be the anguished cry of a runaway slave. —Harvard Film Archive

The show was produced by Shepherd & Associates in Lincoln, Nebraska. Linda King was the creator of the show and did the voices for the puppets. The main theme of the show was to teach about Jesus Christ in a child-friendly matter. The main characters included the puppets Froggie, Crow, and Turtle, along with their human mother/guardian named Jana Wacker as well as an elementary school-aged girl who hosted the mini-segments involving making crafts. In addition to the crafts, each episode included a Bible verse sing-a-long with children playing simple instruments. Also, the subject of each episode is discussed with several children providing their answers to questions provided by Jana and/or the puppets. At the end of each episode, Froggie asks the audience to pray with him and ask Jesus for his forgiveness and salvation. Kids were also encouraged to send in fan letters as well as their own drawings of rainbows. Starting with the 7th episode, Froggie shows some of the letters, rainbow drawings, and even pictures of some of the show's fans. The show also sold many types of Color Me A Rainbow merchandise, such as the videos, T-shirt, coloring book, and other things through the use of commercials hosted by the puppets. These commercials were not included in the videos.
